Where Does Our Help Come From?
I lift my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, maker of heaven and earth. ~ Psalm 121:1-2.
A Song of Ascents. Lifting up your day may not always be easy, but up towards our Savior is exactly where our gaze should be fixed.
Six years ago, my life was in utter chaos. I was starting over and it wasn’t easy to get in the habit of seeking above me for answers.
In fact, because my regard was once fixed so intently on the things around me, I lost nearly everything, including my freedom. Although the Lord used every shred of my consequences to teach me, I now give twice the effort towards making sure others don’t fall into the same trap.
In a compilation from Charles Spurgeon’s on Prayer and Spiritual Warfare, Spurgeon discusses David’s prayer from a cave. (Psalm 142) He states that “There is no place to which you can be banished that God is not near, and there is no time of day or night that His throne is inaccessible.” He goes on further to point out that “The caves have heard the best prayers.”
King David knew then that the Lord was his refuge and that his power to overcome his current circumstances could only be found by crying out to the One who could truly save him.
There is an abundance of self-help material available concerning the fastest ways to bounce back, and even more literature can be found on how to find satisfaction in life. Unless these books point you back to The Book that is truly going to make a difference, long term fulfillment can’t be guaranteed.
God requires us to put away all from this passing world and seek Him with true humility. (James 1:21)
Before I understood what this looked like in reality, I exhausted every quick fix measure I could find. Be it through substance, exercise, work, or play, I found nothing strong enough to ease the burdens in my daily life.
It wasn’t until I was brought low and surrounded by complete darkness, that I finally began to call out in the spirit and manner in which I was designed to. What I discovered once brought to my knees is just as Scripture declares.
Humble yourselves before the lord and HE will lift you up. ~ James 4:10
